Tombpunk is my lo-fi, lightweight, fantasy roleplaying game, published under license by Outland Entertainment. You can find it here on DriveThruRPG.
Tombpunk: Arcana is a series of articles written by me expanding content for the game with “playtest” material (I don’t think I can call it homebrew if I’m the official writer/creator!).
While the three professions in Tombpunk cover the “trifecta” of classic fantasy roleplaying archetypes, there’s a lot of room for growth and excitement with other professions.
Today I present one of my favorite fantasy classes, the Gunfighter. I love firearms in fantasy, I think they add a wonderful amount of uniqueness to a setting, especially when used appropriately.
Gunfighters
Gunfighters are among the rarest professions in the land. The cost in coinage of maintaining their signature gear compels them to make a living the hardest way possible: by violence and raiding. The lifespan of a gunfighter is naturally short, and it’s rare that a group might meet one (though not impossible, especially where great wealth is at stake.)
Gunfighters start with Lifeblood equal to Might+8, Courage 3, Coin 5, Will 3 and the Special Abilities Firearm Training and Lone Wolf.
Gunfighter Attacks do 1d8 damage.
FIREARM TRAINING: Gunfighters start with a pistol, rifle, or shotgun (see below). This firearm does not cost Coin. The Gunfighter must choose one of the following benefits:
- Pistoleer: Your pistols gain Brutal +1.
- Sniper: Your Rifles gain Armor Piercing +1.
- Crowd–Control: Your Shotguns gain Defensive 1.
LONE WOLF: You may never join a group or work with another Gunfighter. If you encounter one, you must make a Courage Test. If you cannot make a Courage Test, you must challenge that Gunfighter to a shoot out (usually resulting in each other’s death).
New Weapons: Firearms
If one wishes to acquire a firearm, it costs 2 Coin, immediately (simply lower your Coin by 2). After every adventure, you must lose 1 coin to maintain your firearm, cleaning and repairing it, and acquiring black powder and shot.
Pistol
A pistol is a Light, Reload 1 ranged weapon. It either has Armor-Piercing 1 or Brutal 1, chosen at character creation (or when purchased.)
Rifle
A rifle is a Reload 1, Versatile ranged weapon. It gains Reload +1 (allow you to fire twice without reloading) or Light (representing a carbine-style rifle), chosen at character creation (or purchasing).
Shotgun
A shotgun is a Armor-Piercing 1, Brutal 1, Reload 1, Two-Handed, Unwieldy ranged weapon. It gains Reload +1 or Defensive +1 (representing the intimidating power of a close-range shotgun.)
